Paradoxically, environmental noise helps preserve the coherence of a quantum system

In work that could lead to scalable quantum computers, scientists have shown that thanks to the 'quantum Zeno effect,' with a three-particle system, that they can use dephasing -- a process that normally would reduce the coherence -- to paradoxically maintain coherence in a quantum system.
